Yesterday my coworker bought a 2009 Mustang GT, with a 5 speed. Black, with the same hood scoop and little spoiler as that one, but different wheels. She got me to take it for a drive today, and while I don’t want a M ustang now, I definitely want something with a V8, preferably with a manual. I mean I already knew I wanted a V8, but I’ve never driven a V8 car with a 5 speed before, and it’s a lot of fun.
Very easy to get into license suspension speeds, like it takes more concentration to keep it near the speed limit, and effortlessly goes too fast. The clutch is heavy, but doesn’t have much feel. The gas pedal is weirdly light, and the transmission is light but direct. The steering feel is pretty decent actually, and it somehow feels grippy and planted, but also wallowy and comfy. It definitely feels like a big heavy car, but it really can move once you put your foot into it a bit. And it doesn’t feel fast, like I was doing 90km/h and it felt like 50km/h does in my Subaru. And this is “only” the 300hp 4.6 Modular. I can’t imagine what a face lifted one with the Coyote would be like, or a current GT.
Keep in mind, I’m used to slow cars, I haven’t driven anything with anywhere near this power since my friend sold his E34 540i, and that had an auto and a taller rear end.

It’s hard to break the addiction to V8s. I stopped trying a few years ago.

Haha yeah I know it’s not an unusual want, or that much power by now, but 300hp and a 5 speed would make be a very happy camper

I had a 2005 GT, which was the first year of the S197, that I bought new . I loved that car but it took a while to get used to after driving a FWD car with 170hp and no torque for many years. I ordered mine with the cloth seats which was unusual for a GT with the gauge package and aluminum interior trim but it was much better than the cheap leather Ford used then.

You might not rule out the S550 mustang. The only thing those have in common with the earlier cars is the model name. That platform handles completely differently. It feels like driving a modern car, to go with having a modern rear suspension.

One other thing:
“And it doesn’t feel fast, like I was doing 90km/h and it felt like 50km/h does in my Subaru.”
In my opinion, this is a BAD thing from a ‘getting speeding tickets’ perspective.
Is it really better to go fast without feeling like you’re going fast?

You get used to it. First year I had it I was like Holee shit! Now not so much.
I'm kinda going thru that with the Ram it feels so tall and fast and has less body roll than my old p71 daily.

I’ve driven my pop’s manual ‘08 GT before, the electronic throttle body setup does not communicate well to your right foot, I never got comfortable with it. I’m too used to my cable-operated Miata throttle body .
Maybe it’s time to join the Oppo Corvette C lub (TM) and get a manual non-Z06 C5?

Obvious bias at play here, but buy a C5 Corvette. Checks all the boxes: power, handling, easy to work on, relatively affordable, fun.

Buy a C5Z. Its quite fast, gets 25mpg on the interstate and fairly reliable. And they are a lot of them around the place for sale.
Also, if you were impressed by the modular you will be blown away by the LS. Whereas the 4.6 makes stable power from mid range, the LS just keeps building and building. Thats the terrifying part :)

Ohh so that’s it. Yeah I’m much more used to cable throttles.
If I had the budget, I’d strongly consider it. If I had more budget, a C4 ZR1 would be cool...

Low, unless I sell my daily and/or get a raise. So current budget would be like $2500-$3500, but there isn’t much good at all with a V8 and a manual in that range.

I want to agree with more power, but I really don’t need more than 300hp. I mean I had a 218hp E28 and that felt plenty fast.

I have a V8 with a five speed.
It made 212 hp (when new), has a redline at 4.5k RPM, and does not feel very fast at all.

Want a power to weight ratio that makes a Corvette ZL1 look like a sloth?
LS swaps are well-documented and pretty simple on this platform. You can fab things yourself, or buy complete kits from V8 Roadsters, Flyin’ Miata, or a few others.
Mine is a bit too beat to go that route (I’m considering making it a winter beater) but someday I’ll get that pristine yellow NA with an engine swap that looks as stock as possible....

It’s certainly not a family car, in more ways than one...
Camaro LFX swap (V6) is another neat swap that's gaining... Err... Traction . 300hp 300ft/lbs of torque with very little weight addition compared to stock.

The cheapest V8 car you can buy is probably a Crown Victoria. I’ d recommend a ex-detective P71 Police Interceptor.

I had a 2014 Mustang GT w/ track package for a while but the car while fast was too big for me. I went back to compacts or “classic” mid sizes.
I wish a company would make a compact with a V8 like a Nova SS or something again.

Can probably get a 90s camaro.
When I was in high school (1999) a kid had a 1990 camaro that was purple. I remember the beauty of that car to this day. It was the 305 w/5 speed. He put a upgraded cam in it and all kinds of mods and it was fast at the time. Probably faster than that Mustang.
He eventually destroyed the trans in senior year and idk what happened to the car after that. It was IMMACULATE so he probably fixed it.

I fully agree. If GM or Ford would make a small sedan or coupe with a V8 and a manual, they’d have my money. A modern Nova or Falcon would be awesome.
